Looking for a fun project for the kiddos (and grownups) this summer? Planting a certified butterfly garden is a great learning experience, loads of fun and you can get a nifty certification sign to put in your garden! It's super easy...you just need to plant the following and fill out the certification form at the North American Butterfly Association's web site : http://nababutterfly.com/ At least three different native caterpillar food plants must be grown, preferably more than one plant of each selected species At least three different native butterfly nectar sources must be grown, preferably more than one plant of each selected species There are so many wonderful plant choices! But here are some of my favorites :) Caterpillar food...
It's transplanting day! I've been growing some of our new gardens and today they are ready to transplant :) I absolutely can't believe how quickly the Grow Sunflowers and Grow Greens have sprouted...8 days and they are more than ready to live outside! I probably should have transplanted them a day or two ago, but it was a super busy week and today is the first chance that I've had...oh how I love Saturday mornings :) Here's what my Grow Sunflowers Garden looks like this morning ~ And here is my Grow Greens Garden! I'm going to transplant the Grow Greens to a slightly shady area on the patio, so they won't wilt as we get into the warm...
We just harvested our first batch of honey! It was really exciting and I still can't believe that our little bees worked so hard all summer to provide us with this delicious liquid gold :)
Because it was so late in the season, we only took a few pounds of honey from the hive to leave the bees plenty to get through the cold winter. Interestingly enough, it's a rich, dark color...different from what I normally see on my grocery store's shelves...I wonder what was blooming in our area to give it that amazing color? I need to do a little research...but anyway, it's totally cool and we're super excited!
We are so excited! Our Dinner Tonight White Bean Chili has been chosen by the Specialty Food Association as a finalist in the competition for the sofi™ award (highest award in the specialty food industry) in the "Soup, Stew, Bean or Chili" category.
